Parmanu is based on a true story. How India became a nuclear state after secretly building nuclear bombs and testing them in Pokhran desert in Rajasthan in estimated time and while not letting the world know till finally, the explosions were carried out. The story begins in 1995. Ashwath Raina is an IAS officer who feels that India should become a nuclear power but since he is too junior, his seniors made fun of his idea. However, one of the seniors sees an opportunity to get attention by copying Ashwath’s idea. They present it to the prime minister without going through the whole plan.
After the PM gives his agreement, the plan execution begins in Pokhran (Rajasthan). But since only a few parts of the plan were started, it got failed. Ashwath is blamed for the faulty plan and was suspended from his job. The fact is that the failure was not because of his faulty plan but because of the careless execution of the plan without reading the full plan of Ashwath carefully. If we go by the film, Raina alone does it all, creates a team, gets it going, and keeps the American spies and satellites at away while the execution of the plan. There is no doubt that the blasts were conducted in full secret, away from satellites. The secret mission lead by him and his secret team. Which had a race against time, US satellites and other challenges, is worth a story.
The six members of his team look like a group of determined soldiers playing hide and seek in the desert. On the whole, Parmanu – The Story Of Pokhran is a good entertaining film. The movie has the flavor of patriotism and good drama as two major plus points. But lack of promotion is a minus point which will not let the film to go to its full potential. Yet, it will prove a great film worth watching.
