We remember smart phones that were too big when initially the very concept of mobile phones had arrived. But gradually the devices started to grow with modern features, comfort and size compatibilities. Now according to the latest report, Apple is working on launch of foldable phones and it is going to be similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G in terms of device design. As reveled, the Cupertino-based firm is looking at a time frame of 2022-23 to launch the product in market, if the attempt becomes successful. Youtuber Jon Prosser said in a recent YouTube video that, Apple was currently in the early stages of its development and was testing the outer shell of the future iPhone at a factory in Shenzhen, China.  He added  that the work is in early stages right now. He also shared a concept image of the folding iPhone, which shows that the rumoured iPhone may have a flip-like design. This future device of Apple has reportedly passed the tests for durability. Two different prototypes were tested at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen of which one is a dual-screen model prototype, as per the report, and the other a clamshell foldable that is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr.  As per a report by a Taiwanese publication Money, the two prototype phones passed the internal tests for durability at the Foxconn factory and Apple’s second prototype, the clamshell model, may use a flexible Samsung OLED display.

Apple will evaluate the most likely model to launch and abandon the other, stated the report.

As the phone is going to be foldable, hence testing the hinge mechanism is important as many foldable phones have failed to withstand continuous flips upon use. The product will fold down like a clamshell, revealing a wider screen once unfolded. Like Samsung flip phones, this device will also have a smaller screen on the outer panel.  Prosser made sure that Apple was not planning to introduce the device just next year, maybe in 2022 or even 2023 and this gives the company to fully test the limits with ample time and release a strong, durable foldable phone. Also, such a wide time period gives the smartphone brand the scope to go ahead with a completely different design in the long run.

Apple has been working on multiple concepts for bendable displays since a long time. In 2019, an Apple patent application had come to forefront which hinted at a three-fold form factor.

The illustrations found on the patent application showed that the potential iPhone might come with both an inward as well as an outward bend. While many other firms have been reported to work on foldable phone designs, Samsung, Microsoft, Huawei and Motorola are some of the names that currently have models out in the market. Apple had also proposed a special spin to the foldable phones with self-healing skins for such devices. LG introduced the concept of a self-healing rear cover, which can repair minor abrasions on its own, in a very nascent stage in its G Flex phablet, but the technology never really took off. Although Apple’s application is no indication that it is working on a foldable phone with a ‘self-healing elastomer’ body, but if it does, there is no looking back. The company is allegedly setting new quality standards – the folding iPhone is going to go through 100,000 folds in the initial testing. Laptops generally are opened and closed about 30,000 times in durability tests before the official launch. In case of phones, more repetitions are essential because they are going to be opened and closed way more frequently than laptops. Samsung for instance tested the Galaxy Fold over 200,000 times; a similar benchmark was followed by LG Wing. Apple would have benchmarks pushed by the time the device is actually ready for the market launch. As we have come to comprehend, Apple wants to make the most refined version of the foldable phone and arrive in the market with a product that has minimum glitches at launch. For Apple fans, the wait up to 2022 may seem quite long given so many Android foldable are waiting to release in the interim, but the odds add up to one fruitful wait in the making.
